Some
say that the proper place for a surfer should be in the waves,
not behind a camera. Fortunately since the early ages of surfing
some guys have had a different opinion. In our film section,
we will focus on the movies shot after surfing had been elevated
from a sport to a way of life. From
legendary directors as Falzon, Greenough, Jepsen or Witzig to
the younger they have inspired, we will bring you the DVDs as
soon as they are available in European format. Subscribe
to our newsletter if you’d like to build an extensive movie
collection, we’ll keep you informed. |

ON SAFARI TO STAY by Chris Ahrens, 1991
The story of two modern longboarders
- Clash, played by 15-year old Joel Tudor, and the equally hot
Wingnut. They're looking for the magical '60s. On their quest,
they meet longboard legends Skip Frye and Donald Takayama. They
borrow Takayama's van and travel deep into Mexico where they
discover good surf and hot times.
Very naive scenario clearly echoing Bruce Brown's Endless Summer,
and featuring all clichés we would love to find in every
surf film: decoration of the van, beach barbecue, switch of
board while riding,... Plus the 16 mm which makes it look vintage.
Definitively refreshing, and shot when Joel was competing for
the Longboard World Title. So fasten your seatbelts.
RIDERS: Joel Tudor, Wignut, Skip Frye, Donald Takayama, Herbie
Fletcher, Phil Edwards, Lance Carson, Dale Dobson, Chris Schlickenmyer,
Chris Olivias and Chris Schroeder.
LOCATIONS: California and Mexico |
